We Will Hear Your Cry: Intro to Critical Reading and Writing

Target Learners:

This Webquest and the assignments herein are composed primarily for a tenth grade advanced English classroom. The final assignment is specifically designed to engage higher-level thinking skills in advanced students to encourage them not only to attempt role play (through pretending to be an African-American or reporter) but to promote cultural awareness.

The lessons, however, can easily be modified to accommodate many other grade levels, considering Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is on an eighth grade reading level. I chose to teach it to tenth graders specifically because this book is easy to follow and rich in what it provides in the areas of cultural conflict and issues--something all students need to be thoughtful of.
