Hello, my name is Sarah Kooistra, an undergraduate English major at Rutgers University-Camden.  I am a Senior, graduating in May, and plan to attend graduate school to become a guidance counselor. I chose this topic for my first WebQuest and for use as my final project in my Contemporary Issues in Education class because it relates to the field that I want to get into and I could use it in my current job.  Currently, I work for a college access center called The Hill Family Center for College Access.  My college access center works with students and non-traditional students in Camden to help prepare them for college through application assistance, FAFSA workshops, academic assistance, and college readiness workshops.  We are located in the lower level of the Paul Robeson Library and work with seven different schools in Camden.  Along with these students, which we call "strivers," we also work with another group, the Rutgers Future Scholars.  The Rutgers Future Scholars program's main goal is to "increase the numbers of academically ambitious high school graduates who come from less-advantaged communities, inspire and prepare them to meet the standards to be admitted to colleges and universities, and then provide funding to those who are admitted and choose to attend Rutgers University."  My center mainly works with the 11th and 12th grade Rutgers Future Scholars, and I designed this WebQuest to go along with the workshops we present to them.  It is Rutgers specific because the Rutgers Future Scholars typically decide to go to Rutgers, because they are able to go on for free on their scholarship, after completing the program.

I have attached news articles on The Hill Family Center for College Access to provide more information on our center and how it started.

My advice for teachers using this WebQuest would be to remind the students that while this WebQuest focuses on Rutgers, there are thousands of other schools to choose from.  Finding the right fit is key, and the best way to find what college best suites you is to research the school and visit the campus. Secondly, while the final concluding step is based on the Rutgers essay, this essay can easily be tweaked to fit the personal statement for the common application.
