This webquest is designed for grade 9-12 students who are interested in the health sciences, specifically in Diabetes Melitis type 2.  This lesson requires close cooperation within the group and with some composition, multimedia production and publishing skills.

  • This webquest is a three day project which allows students to investigate diabetes type 2 through a selective web-search and use of multimedia. 
  •  The overall aim of the project is to allow students to gain real life knowledge of the issues, treatment and prevention of Diabetes type 2 as well as gain a multiple of skills: multimedia ( Audacity recorder, voki and crazytalk presentations, group work,  etc.)
  • Students may also expand the project into traditional presentation methods such as PowerPoint,  publishing tools or poster presentation if technology is limited.  Access to the internet is necessary.  At least one computer  with a microphone and speakers per group is recommended.
  • This project allows for tasks for students with limited English abilities (ESL students) but the majority of the tasks requires literacy in English.
The other aim of the webquest is for students to other types of intelligence (Gardner, Howard (1983). Frames of Mind: The theory of multiple intelligences, New York:  Basic Books) :
  1. Verbal/Linguistic  write the script 
  2. Visual/Spatial .....Multimedia crazytalk, Voki or traditional presentation
  3. Musical .............. create a song or rap to be used in multimedia
  4. Body/Kinesthetic .Students can develop and demonstrate an exercise plan 
  5. Interpersonal ...... Working in groups on different elements. 
  6. Intrapersonal ...... Reflective journey of the project from their own point of view.


Instructional Objectives:

Upon completion of the webquest, students should know:

  • What is diabetes, the signs/symptoms, the risk factors and who is at risk?
  • What are the treatment options, including lifestyle changes. 
  • In addition to the science, students will gain additional skills in web searches, evaluating content, producing multimedia or publication material.
  • They will gain skills in group work and time management.


Prerequisites.

  • Students should have an upper-intermediate (ESL) or better level of English. 
  • Students should have computer knowledge and the ability to navigate
    around the World Wide Web.


Sections of our Webquest:

The introduction page of the webquest introduces the topic and gives students an example of multimedia ( Voki avatar)

Tasks describes what the students will be doing and assigns jobs and duties for the group.. Please arrange students in groups of 3-4

The Process section gives specific instructions for each of the jobs in the webquest. It gives examples of which programs they should be using and what application, videos and websites they should start looking for information. Please note that the students are not limited to these suggestions.

Evaluation section describes the Webquest and Presentation rubrics and a reflective journal.

By the time the students finish with the conclusion system, they should realize how lifestyle and personal choices may effect their health and the consequences and issues of being diabetic.
