Nations of the Western Hemisphere
Process
Discovery Plan Instructions
After your teacher has assigned you to a specific nation, you will move to sit with your group.
Next, everyone in your group will be assigned to be an Expert for specific information about your nation. The information that you are assigned to be an Expert on is included in your Discovery Plan.
All of your nation group members will be responsible for finding the information, and you, as an Expert, will present your specific information list to the class later on.
Your group will open your specific nation's Discovery Plan, read over the Discovery questions, and put your name on the line that you are the Expert on.
Then you will begin to research your nation. Watch your nation's video and go to the website to look up information. The Discovery Plan information you find about your nation should be written out on a separate sheet of paper.
After your group has found the information about all of their Discovery questions, each Expert will verbally summarize their information for the rest of your nation's group.
When the Expert is talking, the other group members should be listening to them and focusing on the information they are explaining.
Poster Board Tasks
After your group has finished your Discovery Plan, one of your group members will come up and take a medium size poster board that you will use to create an informational poster about your specific nation.
Each Expert will be responsible for putting their specific information on the board. As a group, go over the information on the board, making sure everything is there. Each Expert should have at least four to five bullet points about their information. The information should be clearly stated so your group members (and the rest of the class) are able to read and understand it!
You can use your nation's website to find two or three pictures to place on your poster, or draw relevant pictures about your nation. Use your creativity to make the poster fun and lively, including the information from your Discovery Plan!
Nation in a Box Creation
Once your group has reviewed the information about your nation, go home and find objects related to the objects your nation would have found important. (for example: pottery, cloths, tools, etc.)
Using the craft supplies provided in class, create any objects from your nation's culture that you may have been unable to find at home.
Have one member bring a shoe box from home to use as your Nation in a Box.
Cover the shoe box with a color of construction paper (or a different material) that is appropriate for your nation's culture.
Once the construction paper has settled, decorate it with symbols or patterns from your nation's culture.
Place the objects you have gathered inside your box.
When all of the poster boards and Nation Boxes are completed, each group will present their nation to the class.
