The "Bare Necessities" of Healthy Living

Process

32712709.gif

STEP 1:  First, both you and your partner will be keeping a food diary and an activity log for the next three days.  This helps you to see areas that you may need to target for improvement.  Access the website given below, print off 3 copies for each of you and be honest about what you write down.  Everything counts-even a taste and every drink. Turn it over and write down every activity you do and how long you do it (If you don’t do anything that day, it’s okay.  Remember we are working on doing better!).

STEP 2:  Next, you will begin your research.  You may have an idea about parts of your journal that seemed to be good choices and parts that need improvement, but you need to know for sure.  Together you need to get some background information.  Please go to the following site:

So, what’s a “Food Pyramid”?  Are you getting the “Bare Necessities”?   How do you know if you are eating right?  Are you active? And, are we having fun yet?  Let’s face it, if it is not fun in some way, most people won’t do it.
Now, check out the following sites together to learn more:

Next, pull out your food/activity journal.  Compare it to the Food Pyramid.  Locate one meal or activity on each of your journals that show a good decision.  highlight it in GREEN.  Locate one meal or activity on each journal that showed a poor choice and highlight it in PINK.  Can you see areas you need to improve?  Were there meals you had that were healthy?   Hand in your food/activity journal.

Step 3:  Okay, now it is time for each of you to become experts.  Each of you will become one of the jobs listed below.  This is where you will now work alone.  Decide which job you will each become.  One of you will be the PROFESSIONAL TRAINER and the other will become the NUTRITIONIST.  You will now each need your own computer.  You will go to your job title and will find the information that is available to you to help you fill out your worksheet.  You will have 3 class periods to work on Step 3.  On the following day, you will share what you learned with each other.

NUTRITIONIST:  If you are the NUTRITIONIST you will use the resources below to help you complete your worksheet.  You will access your worksheet by clicking on Attachment 1 at the bottom of this page and then printing it off.  You do not have to visit every site or read every book, but be sure to use enough of a variety that you can understand your topic.
