The Discriminant: the Inside Scoop of the Quadratic Equation

Evaluation

This webquest correlates with California Math Standards for 8th through 12th grades in Algebra 1, sections 20.0, 21.0, and 22.0.  Students should already have understood the derivation of the quadratic formula, and graphing a quadratic function.  The quiz will evaluate whether students understand the relationship between the value of the discriminant and the number of roots.  Other evaluation methods exist; however, the attached quiz works quite well.

Rubric

# 0, unsuccessful 1, beginning 2, very good 3, successful Score
Students evaluate the discriminant of 12 quadratic equations. Student does not evaluate any discriminant. Student evaluates only positive discriminants. Student evaluates non-negative discriminants. Students successfully evaluate all discriminants. 12
Students graph each quadratic equation. Student does not graph equations. Graphs have parabolic shape, but do not correspond to the given equations. Graphs have parabolic shape, but either the vertex or the intercepts are incorrect. Graphs are essentially correct. 12
Students observe the number of roots of each equation from the graph. Student does not evaluate roots. Some roots are evaluated properly. No explanation of double roots or lack of roots is given. The majority of roots are evaluated properly; some explanation of double roots or the lack of roots is given. All roots are correctly given, and proper explanations of double roots and the lack of roots are given. 12
Students correlate the value of the discriminant to the number of roots. No correlation given. A correlation is attempted, but is largely incorrect. A correlation is given which is largely correct. A completely correct correlation is given. 24
