When the value of the discriminant of a quadratic equation is known, the number of roots is also known.  For our purposes, a positive discriminant indicates two unequal roots; a zero discriminant indicates one double root, that is, the quadratic is a perfect square; and a negative discriminant indicates there is no real root.
