Who Are We?

Teacher Page

This lesson is cultural relevant because students are learning from each other.  All six multicultural elements are exemplified in this lesson.  Students are not just encouraged to self-reflect, but to also learn about their multicultural environment from each other.  The cultural awareness is both self reflection, and the presentation to each other.  Cultural relevance is displayed because students will be able to reflect on how their diversity helps each other and in life-long learning, their society.  The assignment promotes a culturally supportive environment because the students will involve their family via interviews as well as having the freedom to celebrate their heritage/culture in front of their peers while demonstrating what that diversity can do to help the class.  The equitable access and instructional flexibility are a little far-fetched but having the ability to choose how to present the information and not just committing to one medium offers the opportunities for students who do not have access to some types of technology but to others.  The instructional integration is evident via the presentation.  The students are going to learn from each other by the technology utilized in their presentations.

Offering the students an opportunity to introduce themselves for not just who they are, but what makes them unique in a multicultural society will open an understanding that students may not have had previously in the diversity within their classroom.  This will also help students see how the diversity which already exists can be an asset to each other.  They may not work together to gather information, but they will be interacting with their family and hopefully have a better respect/understanding of who they are so with an increased motivation.  When they make their presentation, their motivation will be evident.
