Extension Activities
Share your findings!
If you have multiple classes working on this project, allow them to look at the Wikis of the other classes. They may find someone who chose the same career as them to compare findings with. They may also have the opportunity to read about other interested careers that weren’t researched in their class.
Invite an expert!
Students love when you bring visitors into class. If possible, find someone who has a “non-conventional” career in music and let them come in and speak to your class.
Apply to real life!
Allow students to search real life help-wanted ads to help them in writing their own ads. Some students may have never looked for a job before, so real ads may be helpful!
Differentiation Ideas
Add more frequent check points
If you have a class that requires a little more one-on-one attention, split the WebQuest up into different checkpoints. For instance, you can have the students show you the products of their research before they create their PowerPoint presentation/report. Or, you can have them show you the PowerPoint presentation/report before they create the help wanted ad. Some students may be intimidated by having to post on the class Wiki. It may be helpful if the teacher reads over their Wiki before it is published to the class page.
Peer review
Peer review is another option if the teacher wants to encourage an even more student-led project. Have students look over each other’s work at various checkpoints and let them give helpful feedback to each other.
Questions for Further Study
What are some careers that exist now in music that didn’t exist 30 years ago? Why did these careers come about?
Because of the ever changing world of technology, there are sure to be new careers in music around the corner. What are some things that you can see happening in the future of music careers?
What is one career you read about in this project that you never thought of before? How does that career affect the music industry in America?
