The first settlers on the Iberian Peninsula were the Celts and the Iberians. The next group of people to arrive were the Phoenicians and Greeks. Then these groups were taken over by the  Carthaginians and Romans. The Roman settlers  lasted for seven centuries.  During this time the basic borders were established and towns were set up.

Also, government was established, Latin was established as the language, religion and the Law.  At the start of the 5th century new settlers arrived, the  Visigoths from the North and the Swabians on the West. Integration between the Hispanic people there with the Germanic settlers coming over. This blending of  Hispanic-Germanics peoples was a rapid process, with the exception of the Northeast of the peninsula, inhabited by Basques, Cantabrians and Asturians, who resisted the infiltration of the Romans, Visigoths and later the Muslims.
