Phase 1

Please complete the following activity and record the information in a google document.

Activity.

1. The class will be divided into four groups, therefore, you will be grouped in groups of four (4) to five (5) students.
2. A deck of playing cards will be divided among the groups (excluding jokers, jacks, queens, and kings).
3. Each group of students will receive 9 playing cards, (1 student from each group will be asked to draw 9 cards from the deck of cards) where you will be instructed to arrange the cards from smallest to largest (ascending order).
4. Therefore, group 1 will have 9 playing cards, group 2 will have 9 playing cards, group 3 will have 9 playing cards and group 4 will have 9 playing cards.
5. You will be instructed to calculate the mean and median of the cards and discuss with your classmates.
6. In groups, you will determine the median when the number of cards is even. Each group will receive an additional card to the eleven cards you had before (In total 10 cards).

Example: Group 1 will receive the following cards: 6 3 9 6 7 6 8 4 5

Ascending order: 3 4 5 6 6 6 7 8 9

The mode for the set of cards above is 6
The mean for the set of cards above is 3+4+5+6+6+6+7+8+9= 54
54÷9 = 6
The mean is 6
The median for the set of cards above is 6. This is so because 6 is the middle value.
The range for the set of cards above is 9 - 3 = 6

Example: Group 1 Receiving an additional card to find the mean and median.
 6 3 9 6 7 6 8 4 5

Ascending order:  3 4 5 6 6 6 6 7 8 9

The mode for the set of cards above is 6.
The mean for the set of cards above is 3+4+5+6+6+6+6+7+8+9= 60
60÷10 = 6
The median for the set of cards above is 6+6 = 12
12÷2 = 6
The range for the set of cards above is 9 - 3 = 6

The following video below can assist you in completing the activity successfully.

You will be asked to share with the class on how you arrived upon your answers and the challenges you may have faced during the activity. You are required to make a video and post your procedure on our facebook page https://web.facebook.com/stat.iks.35. You will need a camera or your phone to record the footage.

Phase 2

Based on your knowledge of measures of central tendency, you will be given a worksheet with four (4) real-life scenarios to calculate the mean, median, mode and range (you must complete this individually).

Phase 3

You are required to click the link provided to complete the worksheet. You should create an answer page in google docs and share your answer with the following email address: [email protected]. You will need to carry your laptop to class and connect to the internet.
