Disability: Then and Now



Step 1: Watch the videos (part 1 and part 2) on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and answer the questions regarding the video.

  • Questions:
    1) What stood out to you, and why?
    2) Do you recall learning about the history of disabilities in any of your classes? Do you think this is important for students to learn about? Why or why not? 


    Step 2
    : Each group member will select one famous person from the list below. Research their biography starting with the link provided. You will answer a set of questions about the person you have selected.

    *Note: You may research a person of your choice that is not on the list with the teacher's approval. 
Step 3: Read the following articles on discrimination against people with disabilities. Discuss your reactions with your group members. Were you surprised? Why or why not?

Step 4: As a group, write a letter to our senators describing the progress we have made so far and make suggestions about further improvements to provide equality to everyone. You may want to look at the resources listed below for more information. Make sure to include your response to the following questions: 

1) What do you think are some of the successes that have been gained since the passing of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973?
2) What are some of the ongoing issues that people with disabilities face today?
3) Include suggestions on how these issues can be resolved.
