Introduction

When the curriculum is departmentalized isn't learning fragmented?

All things are connected. All subject areas are connected.

You are a Social Studies teacher and you must integrate the curriculum to enable students to see the connections and relevance between subject areas. Your mission is to link Economics, Religion, Sociology, Political Science, and Communication to Social Studies to make their learning experience more meaningful. You must use an overarching theme to establish links between the subject areas and aid in achieving your objective of combining the disciplines to allow students to see that there are links within and across learning areas.

Before you can begin integrating the subject areas click on the link below to refresh your memory on what is Social Studies, and the disciplines that fit under the Social Studies umbrella. Discover how social studies is interdisciplinary, likewise sports and how sports feature every part of social studies in one way or another.

When you have finished viewing the the Microsoft Word document click on the "Propofs" link to complete a brief quiz that will test your knowledge of what you have just read. Good luck!

Additionally, there is a sample photostory presentation on how to use an overarching theme to link at least five disciplines/subjects to Social Studies. See how this can help you with your own presentation.
