Cellular Respiration Process Overview

Teacher Page

Cellular Respiration is the culmination of the first section of the Next Generation Science Standards for California Public Schools, grades nine through twelve.  Using models and diagrams, this WebQuest illustrates the general conceptual understanding of the inputs and outputs of the process of cellular respiration and vocabulary to help students understand this extremely complicated combination of processes. The steps and specific processes do not need to be assessed, but it is helpful to include an overview of the conversion of pyretic acid, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, the electron transport chain, and fermentation.

I have designed this project to last two days, but it could be limited to one day for a general tenth grade Biology class, or stretched to a one week long project for an AP Biology class.

Standards

This WebQuest gives students a detailed introduction to HS-LS1-7 which states that students should use a model to illustrate that cellular respiration is a chemical process whereby the bonds of food molecules and oxygen molecules are broken and the bonds in new compounds are formed resulting in a net transfer of energy.

The disciplinary Core Ideas include LS1.A whereby systems of specialized cells within organisms help them perform the essential functions of life. Multicellular organisms have a hierarchical structural organization, in which any one system is made up of numerous parts and is itself a component of the next level (HS-LS1-2). Also Energy cannot be created or destroyed as it moves between objects or systems.

For ELA/ Literacy standards, this project gathers relevant information from multiple digital sources. Drawing evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. (WHST.9-12.7, and WHST.11-12.8)
