Historical Context: The 30s and 40s

You and your classmates work for a publishing company in the United States in the time period from 1928-1948. Your mission is to create an illustrated fictional short story that will catch the interest of your readers AND be true to the time period in which you live. You are to pick one important event and set your fictional story within that true context. Your story must involve characters living in the United States during the twenty-year period from 1928 to 1948 who are affected by what is happening in the world at this time. Suggested topics:

  • The Great Depression
  • Life on a Submarine
  • The Attack on Pearl Harbor
  • Navy Ships of World War II
  • The Atomic Bomb Test in the Bikini Islands

Your team is made up of four people:

1.) The Researcher:  This person will consult sources of information to create a list of historical facts that will be used in creating the setting for the story.

2.) The Character-Creator: This person will create full descriptions of all characters involved in the story. This should include appropriate names, physical descriptions, emotional and psychological characteristics, etc.

3.) The Story Creator: This person will create a plot-line, pulling the characters and setting together to create the final story.

4.) Artist: This person will design the cover and create illustrations for the story.
