Physiographic Divisions of India

    India is a large landmass with astounding diversity in the geological formations and relief features. These physical features of India are grouped into six major physiographic divisions:

•     The Himalayan Mountains;
•     The Northern Plains;
•     The Peninsular Plateau;
•     The Indian Desert;
•     The Coastal Plains; and,
•     The Islands.

    Each of these divisions have distinct characteristic features including relief, soil types, drainage patterns, climatic conditions and even the flora and fauna.
