Process

Each of you were numbered off prior to beginning this webquest. Here are the individual tasks for each member of the group by number and name:

  • (1) Coach - You will keep the whole group on task, making sure everyone is doing their job while giving your own personal input.
  • (2) Captain - Your job is to keep track of the answers developed by you and your teammates. If there are any questions throughout your exploring, you will communicate with your teacher.
  • (3) Computer Pro - It will be your duty to navigate you and your group through these sites, in search of correct and helpful information.
  • (4) Curious Consultant - Using your expert judgement and questioning skills you will make sure that the answers you and your group provided make sense.
As you complete each task, please record your findings and answers in a document that can be emailed to me (Word doc, Google doc, etc.).

Task 1

As a group, you will play the ID Theft FaceOff quiz game; since you have yet to explore about identity theft, this quiz will help to see where your common sense might lead you while teaching you more about the topic. Record each question and keep track of each individual's response for each question in your document.

Task 2

Using Merriam-Webster.com, provide a definition that you find by recording it in your document. Take some time to explore and learn all that you can about identity theft. Using the Federal Trade Commission site, explore the Privacy & Identity tab:
  • Watch the What is Identity Theft? video located along the right side of the page. Record in your document 2 to 3 of the 5 tips that were given. Keep in mind that, although you might not need to know all of the information from this video now, it will be important later in your life.
  • By reading through some of the information in this section of the site, create a definition for identity theft as a group. Make sure to use your own words.
Task 3

For this task, spend some time learning about How Identity Theft Works. Within your document, talk about the following:
  • Common ways that criminals can get personal information from their victims
  • Different types of theft that such criminals can commit
  • Ways that people can protect themselves from identity thieves
Task 4

Now it is your turn! As a group, create a scenario in which a made-up person was threatened by identity theft (different than the one in the 'Task' section). Use everything you've learned about identity theft to come up with the best story that you can create. Write a short narrative containing the following:
  • Give the character a name, job title, and lifelike. That is, have fun sharing some details about their (made-up) personal life.
  • How did they fall victim to the theft?
  • Include a statistic found within this source: Identity Theft Victim Statistics.
  • What did they do to fix the problem and further protect themselves from allowing this to happen in the future?
Make sure your narrative is recorded in your document.
