Day 1:

Review each of the common coins, their value, and how many you would need to make a dollar.

  • Quarter: $.25  There are four quarters in one dollar.
  • Dime: $.10  There are 10 dimes in one dollar.
  • Nickel: $.05  There are 20 nickels in one dollar.
  • Penny: $.01  There are 100 pennies in one dollar.

Day 2: Students are given a bag of different types of coins that add up to one dollar.

A: Sort out your bag of coins. How many of each coin do you have?

B: Look at your first item. How much does it cost? Do you have enough money? What coins can you put together to make that amount?

C: How much money do you have now that you bought the item?

D: Look at your next item. Find out if you can make this price with your coins. If not, what coins do you need?

Click on the link below to get the worksheet.  Fill in both pages.  Look in your math folder for examples of how to set up your "Subtraction Scaffold".  Hand in to the purple box on my desk.

HAVE FUN!
