Explore: According to scientists, the volcanoes of the Hawaiian Islands were created by a "hot spot" beneath the Earth's crust.

- Click on the link Hawaiian Islands and its volcanoes at the bottom of this page and study the map of the islands and volcanoes on each island shown on the website.
- Use this site to draw a map of the 8 major Hawaiian Islands on an 11" x 17" sheet of paper. Label each island and the volcanoes found in each island.

- Click on Natural Disasters of Hawaii.
- Click on Anger of Pele highlighted in blue to the left of the word "Volcano" and explore the links in Red. Use the information to complete #5. Click on Next at the bottom of the website page to explore ALL the links in Red.
- Click on Disaster Menu at the bottom of the website to go back to Natural Disasters of Hawaii. Click on Birth of New Land highlighted in blue to the right of the word "Volcano." Then click on Adventures - True Stories and Myths. Read the mo'olelo (story) about Pele.
Click on Disaster Menu at the bottom of the website page to go back to Natural Disasters of Hawaii. - Open the Worksheet Questionnaire link at the bottom of this page. Download the file by clicking the "OK" button. Then click on "File" on the top left of the page and click "Print," to print out the worksheet and answer the questions. Use the website link to help you answer the questions.
- Complete the Worksheet Questionnaire.
- Draw a Map of the 8 major Hawaiian Islands. Label Hawai'i Island Kaho'olawe, Kaua'i, Lana'i, Maui, Moloka'i, O'ahu, and Ni'ihau and their volcanoes.

- Click on the link "Mo'olelo O Pele" at the bottom of this page and read the mo'olelo (story) of Pele on how the islands were formed.
- Print out either the Venn Diagram OR double bubble map at the bottom of this page (or create your own venn diagram or bubble map) and use them to write out your similarities and differences.
- Be sure to include at least 3 similarities and 3 differences.
