Do you know the Parts of Speech?

Process

1. First you will obtain a partner decided by me.  Once you are by your partner, open a Word document and save it in Mitchell, Brenda folder as "Parts of Speech Web Quest Your Name". You will be using this document throughout the entire web quest. Please label each section and save often.

2. Click on the Pre-test button on the left side of your screen.  Take the Pre-test independently. Each part of speech is only used once. The answers to the quiz will be projected onto the SMART board. Check your answers.  If you got any of the parts of speech wrong, type them onto your Word document.  You will need to pay particular attention to those as you work through the Web Quest with your partner.

3. With your partner, use this PowerPoint to review the parts of speech.  Underneath your Pre-test on your Word document, please type each part of speech and its definition. Some parts, such as nouns, are going to have more types (for example concrete and abstract nouns).  While I want you to review these, you do not have to write them down.  Simply just stick to the basic eight parts of speech. We will review more in depth at a later time.

4. Use this Parts of Speech website to find a sentence using the part of speech correctly. Split the parts of speech down the middle so both partners are only looking for four parts of speech. Type the sentence you find underneath the corresponding part of speech, and then highlight (or change the color of) the word you are demonstrating. Remember, you want to keep this simple as you are teaching this topic for the first time.

5. Use this website to help with coming up with your own sentences.  You will write one sentence of your own for each part of speech. Work with your partner to come up with fun sentences.  Creativity counts! Also, attached on the bottom is a Parts of Speech review sheet. I made this to assist you with this step. Don't worry about completing the worksheet, just use it as a guide when coming up with sentences.

Checkpoint One:  At this point you should have completed the following: took the Pre-test, reviewed the PowerPoint, typed the definition and sentence you found for each part of speech, made up your own sentences for each part of speech. If you've finished these items, you are ready to move on!

6. Now that you've reviewed the parts of speech, we need to make sure you are ready to teach the 3rd grade students! Both yourself and your partner will each play this review game. Click on the advanced game and work on the game with your partner.  How many did you get correct? Write the score on your document.

Checkpoint Two: At this point you should have finished everything in Checkpoint One and also have played a
review game.  If you've finished these items, you are ready to move on!

8. Now you need to prepare your lesson.  Using the information you've collected on your Word document, you will create a Prezi.  Go to Prezi and create an account. Pick a template and get started.  Your Prezi needs to have all eight parts of speech.  Each part of speech needs the definition, the sentence you and your partner made up, and a computer generated image to depict that specific part of speech.  For example, you may use two people holding hands for conjunction.  Some pictures may be tricker to find than others.  Use the image search on Prezi to find pictures, or google images. Here is an example of a Prezi I started.  This should give you a starting point. One person is in charge of typing and another person is in charge of finding appropriate images.

9. Once you've finished your Prezi, you are going to have to make sure your students understand the material.  The best way to do this is by making a game!  You are going to make Mad Libs. Go to this website to review what Mad Libs are if you're unsure.  Once you have an idea of how Mad Libs work, go to this website.  Fill in the blanks for the Mad Lib on the page.  Pretty fun, right? Now it's time to make your own.

10. Open up a new Word document and name it "Mad Libs Your Name". Both yourself and your partner will write a short story (no more than 2 paragraphs).  Don't worry about blanks, just write. Once you are both finished, switch lap tops with your partner. Your partner will create the blanks in your  story, telling the person what part of speech they need to fill in.  Only take out Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives. Switch lap tops back.  Try your Mad Libs now!  Save copy of both your story with and without the blanks so we can see how much the story changes as different students try it.

11. Now that you have all of your materials ready to teach a well-rounded lesson, let's test your abilities to make sure you KNOW your PARTS OF SPEECH! Click on the Post-test on the left side of the screen.  Take the Post-test. Once you are finished, raise your hand.  I will come to you and you will show me your Post-test.  If I find any of your answers unsatisfactory, you will need to redo those questions again.
