Civil War/Dividing line between North and South

The internet exploration is split up into five days. Each day you will need to complete the required tasks for that day. The questions will need to be answered using complete sentences with proper punctuation and grammar; this will be required for every page of the power point presentation.

Day 1: American History

Today, we will begin with watching a video that will help you learn some of the events that took place prior the civil war. You should take notes on the important events so that you can later research more detail on these events. After the video you will create a timeline that you will add into your power point presentations.

� The timeline should include all the events such as industries, slavery, Underground Railroad, cotton gin, textile mills, and Abraham Lincoln. The events should have at least 3 facts to why it was an important role that led to the Civil War.

� Use Resources 1 and 2 to find the following information.

1. To start off we will watch the video America The Story of Us Episode 4: Division. Take notes during this video. It is a good idea to number the events so you know where they will need to go on your timeline. Identify major American figures and write a short biography of each, this information will be needed for your power point presentations.

2. After the video I will put you in pairs, you and your partner will begin to research information on the cotton industry and how it affected people�s lives.

3. Last, you will research the cotton industry had on women. You will need to summarize and put into your own words the information found so you can add this information to your power point presentations.

� When the research is complete, you may create your timeline, using a piece of paper. Add the dates and events that you have found, make sure they are in numerical order. Once you have created your time line on paper you may begin finding photographs that go along with your time lines. These photographs should be saved onto your flash drives for use in your power point projects.

Day 2: World History

Use Resources 3, 4 and 5

1. The first topic to research will be what a cotton gin is and how it changed the cotton industry. You will want to include a picture of the cotton gin for your power point.

2. The second topic to research will be on the textile mills.

� What the purpose was of the textile mills.
� Who worked at the textile mills?
� The machinery used within the textile mills.
� How this machinery relates to the technology today.
� How much money was made by the workers of the textile mills?
� Photographs relating to the textile mills and machinery.

3. The third topic will be how the cotton industry affected the growth of cities.

� How the cotton industry raised the middle class.
� The spread of the industry.
� The labor issues that went with working in the cotton industry.
� Photographs that relate to the cotton industry.

A. When you have completed research for today you can start putting the information and photographs into your power points.

B. Remember to save your power points and unused information and photographs to your flash drives, so you can continue tomorrow right were you left off.

Day 3: Geography

Use resource 6 and the video

1. Today you will research the geographic obstacles that people had to overcome in order to move west.

� How were they able to get the train tracks through the mountains?
� What methods did they use to do so?
� What other problems in the land did they encounter while moving westward?
� What made people want to move west?

2. Second you will need to find details on the people�s culture.

� Their literacy, occupations, clothing and property rights.
� Photographs of the people and land masses that they had to overcome.

A. Continue to put the information in your power points and remember to save on your flash drives.

Day 4: Economics

Use resources 7, 8 and 9

1. Today you will research slave auctions.

� What was the purpose of these auctions?
� Where were these auctions held?
� Who were the people buying or selling at the auctions?
� How the slaves chosen and what were they chosen for?

2. You will also need to research the Underground Railroad.

� What was the Underground Railroad?
� Who ran it?
� Who helped?
� How people chose to take some things over others.
� What were the consequences for using the Underground Railroad?
� Create A map of where the Underground Railroad was located.

3. The third thing you will have to research is a list of other people who helped free the slaves.

� At least 5 people who helped.
� List names alphabetically.
� Write a short biography and how they helped.
� Pictures placed by each person's name

A. Continue to add the new information and photographs to your power points. Save your projects to your flash drives.

B. Try to get as much done on your projects today. You will only have today and tomorrow to complete. You will present on Monday.

Day 5: Civics/Government

Use resources 10, 11, 12 and 13

1. First thing you will have to research today is; what was the government like in the 1800�s.

� Who was president?
� How were laws made?
� What laws were in place?

2. Second you will need to research how the following philosophies and documents influenced the creation of the constitution.

� Magna Carta
� English Bill of Rights
� Montesquieu�s separation of power
� John Locke�s theories-natural law, social contract
� Mayflower Compact
� Declaration of Independence
� Articles of Confederation

3. Third you will need to research how Abraham Lincoln affected the people.

� How did the South feel about Lincoln?
� How did the North feel about Lincoln?
� How did each group react to Lincoln being elected?

A. Finish adding all your information to your power points. Please remember to save to your flash drives; we will be using your flash drives to open your projects on the smart board.

B. If you are unable to finish your power points please take the flash drives home to finish. If you do not have a computer at home or if you need additional time I will be here for 2 hours after school and an hour eThere are numerous websites you can investigate to learn about the Civil War.
