Day 1: American History

You will have the next five days to work on finding the information you will need to build your power point presentations on the event that led up to the Civil War. You will present your power points the following week.

Lesson Objectives:

You will research information about life before the civil war and the events that led up to the Civil War. With this information you will create a power point presentation. The power point will need to have a title page, at least 6 information pages, and a resource page. These pages should include:

� A time line of events prior the Civil War
� How the cotton industry changed lives
� How the cotton gin changed the work industry
� How women were affected by the industry
� New technology that led to the technology today
� Slave auctions
� The Underground Railroad
� List of people how helped free the slaves and a brief description of what they did, such as Harriet Tubman, Josiah Henson, Anthony Burns, John Brown, and etc.
� The differences in the North and South�s opinions on slavery
� Describe the affect Abraham Lincoln had on slavery
� Photographs of the events and people prior to the Civil War
� Charts and/or graphs to compare profits that were made in the North and South over the years prior the Civil War
� Description of the key vocabulary words: Civil War, Slaves, Cotton Gin, Textile Mills, Spinning Mules, Power Looms, and Underground Railroad

You are to use the internet, books, encyclopedias, books written specifically about the war or events leading up to it. You shall also review the events immediately following the war. There are some situations that are currently in the news relating to some unresolved issues stemming from that era. What are they? Newspaper articles, news magazines, historic novels, films will provide a wealth of information for your paper and oral presentation.
