Introduction

An idiom is an expression or terms that is unique to a language. It is a group of words that has a completely different meaning from the meaning of each word on its own. Idioms have to be learnt as complete phrases, each with its own unique (often unexpected) meaning. Its meaning cannot be understood by reading the words. The origins of these unusual phrases are astonishing, poetic, bizarre and sometimes mysterious. For example, knowing the verb to go and the noun song will not really help you understand the meaning of the idiom to go for a song, which is when something is sold very cheaply.
