Atomic Bomb Debate

Conclusion

After both side present their position, the class will have a group discussion on how they view the US deciding to drop two atomic bombs on Japan effectively ending World War II and bring the world to the nuclear era. We will watch videos on the aftermath of the bomb to see the destruction they had and decide if anyone's opinion has changed. This lesson will led directly into the next section of US history as we see the aftermath of World War II make the US the worlds first superpower. We will learn about the US programs to rebuild the nations they had destroyed and how US-Soviet relations deteriorated.

The students will be asked how they felt with this lesson type, for them to research the topic on their own. It would be important to get feedback from the students to see what works and what can be improved. Sources that the students discovered can be used for the lesson in the future. This topic is a complicated issue and should be handle with care and sensitivity. Students that followed these guidelines should be commended. The true goal of this assignment goes beyond teaching students about the end of World War II. The students should have developed skills in teamwork and cooperation, researching and collaborating, and public speaking.
