Australian Government
Process
You will be assigned to a team of approximately 3 students. Please remember that not all activities are undertaken in the team, Activity 1 is to be completed individually. You must do Activity 1 before you start your second activity.
Activity 1: Federation
This task is to be completed individually.
Step 1. You are required to explore the below websites.
Step 2. Once you have explored the websites you must answer the following questions.
- What is Federation?
- Before Federation, what do you think it would have been like to live in South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales?
- Why do you think Australia Decided to form a Federation and become one nation rather than remaining as individual colonies?
- What do you think Australia would be like if we did not Federate?
Note: You are required to answer questions in a word document (please label questions). Do not copy and past information. All questions must be your own thoughts and opinions and a minimum of 50 words for each question must be completed (this is only a minimum you are encouraged to write more).

The Activity you do next will depend on the final task you wish to undertake. If you choose to do Option 1 you will now do Activity 2, if you choose Option 2 you will now do Activity 3.
Activity 2: Three Tiers of Government
This task is to be completed in pairs.
Step 1. You are required to explore the below websites.
Step 2. Once you have explored the websites you must answer the following questions.
- What are the Three Tiers of Government and what are some of the roles and responsibilities of each?
- Why do you think it is necessary to have more than one level of Government in Australia? (Hint remember these decisions were made when communication over large distances in Australia was difficult not like modern Australia today).
Note: You are required to present your findings as a 2 minute presentation to the teacher (not the class) during class time, this will be arranged during the unit. Each group member must contribute to the discussion.

Activity 3: Three Tiers of Government
This task is to be completed as a whole group.
Step 1. You are required to explore the below websites.
Step 2. Once you have explored the websites you must complete the following tasks.
- You are required to interview a politician from either your Local or State Government. You will develop you own interview questions; you may want to ask them, What their role/job is? How can you personally make changes in South Australia? What are some of their policies? Or why they want to be a politician?
Note: You must clarify with the teacher who you wish to interview, as we do not want the same politician interviewed by all students. you are required to show your interview questions to your teacher before you conduct the interview. You must have a minimum of 10 interview questions. The interview may be conducted face to face. by email, or by telephone. It is up to you how you record your findings.
