A Trip to the Winter Olympics

Process

You will be assigned to work with a partner for the WebQuest portion of this assignment. Each of you will do your own Excel spreadsheet and itinerary, and they do not need to be identical. You will be individually graded on your teamwork as well as your finished products. You need to take detailed notes at every step so that you will be able to finish your spreadsheet and itinerary from your notes.

Planning Your Trip to Vancouver

Step 1:  Acquire your passport:  How much will it cost? What documents do you need to have before you can apply? How long will it take before you receive it?

Step 2:  Decide on your dates of travel: To do this, you will go to the official Vancouver Olympic web site and choose a minimum of three events that you would like to attend. You and your partner do not have to attend the same events. Make sure that you write down the date, the time and the venue (location) of each event you wish to attend.

Step 3:  Use Orbitz to find plane reservations that will allow you to arrive at least one day before the first event you wish to attend and leave the day following the last event:  What is the least expensive flight? Be sure to write down the airline name(s), flight number(s) and cost. Which flight is the quickest? Record the same information for that flight. Which flight is the most expensive? Also record that flight's information.

Step 4:  Online hotel reservations are unavailable at this time. Using the official Olympic destination planner, choose two other types of accomodations that you might reserve instead. Write down the type of accomodation and the minimum listed price per night to use on your itinerary.

Step 5:  What will the weather be like in Vancouver in February? Check the historical weather data to see what the average February temperature is at the Vancouver International Airport. Try finding the information at both of these web sites. One is operated by the government, the other is a commercial web site. Make notes about which web site you prefer and compare to see if your data is the same from both sites. Remember that this information will be reported in degrees Celsius. Use the third site to convert your temperatures to Fahrenheit.

Step 6:  Order Warm Clothes:  If you are attending an outdoor event, you will need a warm coat, boots, insulated pants and some form of "long underwear." If you are only attending indoor events, you will still need a warm coat and boots, as you will be outside waiting for public transit. There is no parking for cars at any of the venues. Use either of these web sites to choose your clothes:

Step 7:  What will you eat? While in Vancouver, you will eat three meals a day in a restaurant. There are many to choose from, but we will use three different restaurants to purchase breakfast, lunch and dinner. When computing the cost of meals, you can use these figures for each day of your stay. Purchase breakfast from De Dutch, lunch (sandwich, drink and dessert) from Boston Pizza and dinner (starter, entree' and dessert) from earls.

Step 8:  Souvenirs - you can't take a trip like this without bringing back souvenirs for everyone in your household and at least two of your good friends. Shop and use the prices from the official Olympic site, but don't worry about shipping since you'll be right there.
