The Pennsylvania Jameses
James Lick was a local man who became one of the wealthest men in California. As you have learned Lick left Fredericksburg and made his fortune in South America. He finally settled in California just days before gold was discovered. Lick as considered both a miser and a philanthropist. View the map of Frederickaburg. James Lick had been gone from the area for many years. At the time the map was drawn, Lick was already dead. Remember Lick was not worthy enough to marry miller Snavely's Daughter.
Complete an NARA Workseet for each primary source you view.
1. View the map. From what you see on the map, which family become more prominant in Fredericksburg?
2. Remember the quote Lick made. "Some day, I will own a mill that will make yours look like a pigsty!" (quote taken from the Lick Observatory Collection website.) View the plans of Lick's Mill. The mill was nicked name Lick's Folly. Does it deserve the name? In your opinion would this mill have made Snavely's mill look like a pigsty?
