Introduction

The term volcano stems from the the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.  Ancient Romans believed volcanic eruptions occurred because the fire god was angry. The Romans were not alone in thinking that eruptions were caused by the gods. Ancient Hawaiian, Native American, Greek and Japanese cultures attributed the rumblings of volcanoes to angry or mischievous deities.

Today we know the scientific reasons that volcanoes erupt, but there are still many unanswered questions.  Scientists who study volcanoes are called volcanologists (var. vulcanologists).

After this webquest you will be able to answer the following questions:

How are convection currents in the mantle responsible for the formation of volcanoes?
How are volcanoes and plate boundaries associated?
How are volcanoes distinct from each other?
