Nutrition is the process by which the body takes in and breakdown (digest) and uses food. It is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses nutrients, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease. It is the supply of materials; food required by organisms and cells to stay alive. In science and human medicine, nutrition is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods. Foods which promotes good nutrition contains certain substances called nutrients, each of which has its own function in the body. These basic nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water.

When the body uses nutrients like fats and carbohydrates the heat energy that is released is measured in units called Calories. Extra energy (calories) will be stored in the body as fat. Some foods have more than one nutrients and all are important for life. The lack of any of the nutrients in our daily diet will result in under-nutrition and causes diseases.
