Layers of the Earth

This quest will help you understand why the inside of the Earth looks like it does.  If you look at the picture above you will see that the Earth is made of several layers.  Understanding what these layers are, what they are made of and other details about them is important to us because every one of those 4 layers has a direct effect on the life that lives on the Earth.  Some of these effects are easy to see and observe, earthquakes for example.  Others are not so easy to see - the Earth's magnetic field is a good example of something that is important to all of us but is very hard to see.
