In today's economy, business and industry are continually searching for ways to minimize costs and resources and maiximize sales and profits. This process of determining the optimum (max or min) conditions for business operations is call optimization and is very important in today’s highly competitive marketplace .

One way to determine the optimum conditions for a given situation is by trial and error. This is often tedious and time consuming.

Mathematics, calculus in particular, is another method for optimization that enables the process to be completed more efficiently and more accurately.

This lesson will explore these two methods for optimizing a shipping box.
