Kindergarten Thematic Unit: Grocery Store

Teacher Page

teacher(10).gif

This unit works best when the students are familiar with a variety of foods, learning different food names, and having an interest in them. It is also nice if you can take the class on a field trip to your local grocery store or have someone from your local grocery store come to your school to talk about his or her store. Adding a classroom grocery store allows your students to learn through dramatic play. Asking parents and colleagues to save empty food containers, grocery flyers, coupons and bags will help add a realistic twist to your students classroom shopping.

The following is a list of books that help bring the grocery store and it's different foods to life in the classroom:

Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert

Come To My Tea Party: A Cookbook for Children by Nancy C. Akmon and Roni Akmon

Foods With Moods and Fast Food by Saxton Freyman and Joost Elffers

Read To Me Rhymes Food by School Specialty Publishers

Food Friends by Cece Bell

Green Food Fun by Lisa Bullard

Grocery Store by Angela Leeper

Max Goes To The Grocery Store by Adria F. Klein

Out And About At The Supermarket by Kitty Shea

A Visit To The Supermarket by B.A. Hoena

Don't Forget The Oatmeal! A Supermarket Word Book by B.G. Ford

You can also ask your librarian what they might have to help supplement your classroom selection for this unit. Don't forget to include books from both the fiction and non-fiction sections to help give a well-rounded selection.

It would be a great addition to the unit if a compilation of the favorite recipes were put together in a laminated and bound book to send home for the families. With parent help and children illustrations this would make a great gift idea for the holidays. An additional link on the classroom website so that it can be accessed easily would be greatly appreciated by the families as well.

Don't forget about cooking with your students. You can give a list of items for each students group to collect during your trip. Then pick a day to learn how to follow a recipe (working on math, reading and science skills) and create something fun and tasty in your classroom. Some fun cooking ideas might include: oatmeal raisin cookies, mini apple or pumpkin pies, homemade biscuits, vegetable soup, or fruit and jell-o salad.
