Kindergarten Thematic Unit: Grocery Store

Process

Now that we have taken our Grocery Store Field Trip and learned about the parts of the Grocery Store and the foods they sell, it's your turn to take a virtual Grocery Store Trip!

First you'll be assigned to a team of 2 students and 1 adult helper.

Your team will travel to the grocery store online by clicking on these websites:

http://www.acmestores.com/specials.php

http://www.gianteagle.com/main/fs_ds.jsp?CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=1107223&bmUID=1194637513295

Here you will find the grocery store sales flyer for Acme Grocery Stores and Giant Eagle.

Aisle 1

Your team will need to print off a copy of the Grocery Store Checklist. You must find food items that match your list in the Acme or Giant Eagle grocery flyer and check them off on your list.

Next, you will need to print off 1 grocery store sales flyer of your choice. You must cut out and paste into your Grocery Store Notebook 1 grocery store item for each letter of the alphabet. If you cannot find an item for a letter in the flyer you may draw a picture of the food. You and your teammate, with the help of an adult, must then write the name of the grocery store item below the picture. Your team will share your work at the end of your journey with the rest of the class.

Aisle 2

Your next stop on your shopping journey will be to create your very own Grocery Store Shopping Song!

In your Grocery Store Notebook, you and your teammate, with the help of an adult, will create your own shopping song, like the grocery store song we sing in class. Each team will be assigned 5 letters of the alphabet. You must come up with an item you would buy at the grocery store for each letter your team is given.

Once your 5 grocery items are complete, you may add your items to the classroom's Grocery Store Song on our chart. You and your teammate must complete your 5 song lines, adding your items at the end of each line.

For example: I'm going to the grocery store to buy something that starts with the letter... A = Apple

Aisle 3

Now you have checked off everything on your grocery list and found everything you were looking for in the grocery store. Have your adult helper print out the grocery food sorting page. Sort the foods you bought by healthy foods and junk foods. Draw or use a cut out picture to represent each food you sort.

Aisle 4

Students get ready to be a chef. Your partners and adult helper will use a recipe you brought to school to find the ingredients during your shopping trip at the online grocery store. You will make two columns in your journal, one for healthy food and one for junk food. You will put each item you find from your recipe under the correct heading, Healthy or Junk.

Aisle 5

We will finish our shopping trip with a taste test of some of the foods on our grocery store list. We will try a variety of healthy fruits and vegetables. You and your teammate will get to touch, smell, taste and even listen to how these foods sound when being chewed or cut. You will have the chance to try each of the foods and write in your journal about the experience. You must choose at least 2 of your favorite foods from the taste test and draw those in your journal, as well as write about why you liked them.
