Try to get the kids involved and use other subjects such as art into your lesson. Having them draw and be creative, gets their mind going and helps them remember the content.

Also, read the book before hand in order to be able to answer any questions they may have.
Assign the book little by little, by chapter, so they don't feel overwhelmed.
Give some sort of assignment or little quiz, as a way of checking if they read or not.
