Steps for Teacher:
1. Introduce the anchor
2. Group students
3. Mini-lesson on preliminary research
4. Group meeting where students choose their school and their section of the research paper
5. Mini-lesson on critical reading
6. Launch the webquest
7. Group meeting where students work out the outline and the draft of the research report
8. Differentiated teaching on the language use and paragraph structure based on the draft writing
9. Hand in the finalized research report
10. Mini-lesson on college fair and presentations
11. Group planning session(s) for presentation
12. College fair (Role Play)
13. Mini-lesson on personal statement
14. Draft personal statement
15. Differentiated teaching (peer editing) on the language use and paragraph structure based on the draft writing
16. Turn in final
17. Project Reflection and Peer Evaluation

From the California Common Core: Grade 8

Reading Informational Texts Objectives
1. Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals ideas, or events (e.g., through comparison, analogies or categories)
2. Analyze in detail the structure of a specific paragraph in a text including the role of particular sentences in developing and refining a key concept
a. Analyze the use of text features (e.g., graphics headers, captions in consumer materials
3. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different mediums
4. Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient; recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced

Writing Objectives:
1. Write informative/explanatory texts, including career development documents to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
2. Write narratives to develop real or imagines experiences o events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences

Speaking and Listening Objectives
1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts and issues, building on others� ideas and expression their own clearly
2. Analyze the purpose of information presented in diverse media formats and evaluate the motives behind its presentation
3. Plan and present a narrative that establishes a context and point of view, presents a logical sequence, uses narrative techniques, uses a variety of transitions, and provides a conclusion that reflects the experience.
4. Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations and clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest
