Discovery 3: Colonizing the New World

In order to start a colony you must complete the following tasks:
Decide on your reason for leaving the Mother Country

  1. Political
  • You will be backed by the King's purse. Any supplies you cannot afford he will provide you. He will also re-supply your colony twice during the first 20 years of your existence. You will receive 2 guns and 1 horse for each Man and 50 units of food for each colonist.
  • In return 1/2 of the land and 1/4 of the food you acquire will belong to the King. You will also have to repay the original price of the supplies the King purchased for you.
  1. Financial
  • You will be supplied by the Company. Any supplies you cannot afford will be provided for you. The company will also re-supply you once during the first 10 years of your existence. You will receive 1 horse and 1 gun for every man in your colony and 30 units of food for each colonist.
  • In return 1/4 of all the wealth you acquire will belong to the Company. You will also have to repay the original price of the supplies the Company purchased for you
  1. Religious
  • You will be loaned 5,000 wealth units by sympathetic people. You will receive no financial support while in the colony, but additional settlers may arrive based upon your success.
  • In return, you must repay all 5,000 wealth units PLUS 10% interest.
Name Your Colony
The names of the 13 colonies had very different origination. Research the significance of the colony names and then choose a name for your colony that will most benefit your people.

Research and Design a Colony Flag
Flags have many meanings. Research historical designs and meaning of flags and design a symbol for your colony.

Name Your Ships
Review registries of current ship names. Research the significance of the Mayflower and other early colonists' ships' names. Then choose a name for your three ships.

Select Your Supplies
After reviewing the historical records detailing supplies carried by the early colonists. Attempt to strategically select supplies that will make the most of your meager cargo spaces. Keep in mind the cost and potential benefits of everything you select. You must also remember that there are no Wal-marts in the New World.

Choose a Land to Start Your Colony
Compare the landing map your ship captain has provided you with historical records and accounts from the first colonists. Be sure to choose a piece of land that will keep you safe, fed and connected to the Mother Country.
