At this point in our class we have covered the basics of heredity and genetics.  We will now take a closer look at genetic disorders that can be a horrific experience for individuals trying to have children.  We will introduce karyotyping, determining genetic disorders, treatment for these disorders.  We will all identify how people get genetic disorders.
You will pick a group of 4 people. Your group must be responsible for finding a genetic disorder and researching it. The disorder must be approved by the teacher prior to research.  In each groups each student will play an important role and will have a specific area of study:  Genetic Counselor, Disorder Specialist, Human Genome Expert, and Parent.
1. Genetic Counselor - The role of this student is to examine what types of treatment are available for the disorder and how you can advice perspective parents on the disorder their child has been, or could possibly be exposed to.
2. Disorder Specialist - The role of this student is to karyotype the disorder and to find out all of the signs and symptoms of the given disorder including live expectancy.  The Disorder Specialist should also find out the amount of research currently being done on the disorder and the amount of progress that has been made towards cures for this disorder.
3. Parent - The role of the parent is to find out the challenges facing a parent who has a child with the disorder.  These include stresses on the family and possible accommodations to be made.  The parent must use the advice and information from the other experts in the group to make very important decisions about the child.
4. Human Genome Expert - The human genome expert is responsible for researching the human genome project.  Any information including what the project is, the mission of the project, length, etc. that the Human Genome Expert feels is pertinent should be reported.
At the end of your research you will need to compile your research in a Word Document.  When research is complete you will need to create an eye catching Power Pointe.  The Power Pointe will be presented at the end of the research.
The PowerPoint will be graded with a rubric.  Your job is to educate yourself as well as educate your classmates on your findings.
