Settling in Ebenezer
Task
This anonymous painting from the late 18th century depicts James Oglethorpe speaking with the Salzburg immigrants about the location of their settlement. Just behind Oglethorpe's outstretched arm you see Philip Georg Friedrich von Reck and Johann Martin Bolzius.
As you examine this painting, ask yourself what Oglethorpe might have been looking for in a location for these Germans, and what the Germans might have expected from their English benefactor.
