Settling in Ebenezer
Process
Your teacher will tell you whether these assignments are to be completed individually or in a small group.
Let's start off with by discussing the painting in general terms.
- Which features grab your eye immediately? Why?
- Which features are rather of secondary importance? Are there any that deserve special attention?
- Painting can often take on dramatic qualities through the depiction of gestures and the interplay of dark and light.
Now let's describe the picture in some detail.
- What kind of vocabulary will you need to write this description? Brainstorm with the members of your group to generate a list of useful nouns and verbs.
- Which prepositions can you use to explain where things are located or where things will be moved to?
- Which adjectives can you use to account for colors, size, age, physical appearance?
- Write a description of the picture in German. Your teacher will tell you whether you should describe the painting as a whole or simply a particular part of the painting.
Using books from the library or information from websites, answer these questions as thoroughly as you can (a few websites are listed below; feel free to add sites you discover to the list!):
- Where exactly is the settlement located that ultimately became the home for the Germans?
- What is the name of the settlement?
- Who was John Oglethorpe?
- Who was Philip Georg Friedrich von Reck?
- Who was Johann Martin Bolzius?
- How long did the Salzburger remain in this settlement?
- Where did the Salzburger then move to?
- How long did they remain there?
Use your imagination to answer these interpretive questions:
- What kind of location do you think the Germans expected to find in the new colony of Georgia? Keep in mind: they had come from the Salzburg region of Austria and had done precious little traveling prior to their forced emigration
- Why do you think Oglethorpe chose this particular location over all the other possibilities? Keep in mind: he was responsible for ensuring that the colony of Georgia remained afloat!
Finally, use your imagination to write and then act out dialogues for one or more of these scenes:
- conversation between Bolzius and von Reck
- conversation between Oglethorpe and a "simple" Salzburger
- conversation between a Salzburger child and his/her parent
- conversation between a Salzburger and an Indian chief (these actually occurred!)
