Process for the First Task (level 1):  Should the Klamath be Terminated?

Process for Second Task (level 2): Federal Relocation program

·         visit the “RWS Series: Concrete Indians – Portraits of the Urban Indian Experience” at http://www.redworks.ca/?page_id=1841

·         Write “Relocation & the Urban Indian Experience” at the top of an index card.

·         Describe the Relocation program and the urban Indian experience based off classroom discussion and the RWS Series.

·      The cards will be collected before the end of class.  


·         Listen to “PRX Piece: Urban Indian Experience: Episode 2 – A Place to Call Home”

·         As you listen answer multiple choice questions using the QUIZ TAB on the webquest.

  • After listening to the PRX Piece, you will answer several short answer questions about what you heard.(Available in Resources)
  • Use the backside of your index card from the previous day to add two reasons why the federal Relocation program was implemented

Process for the Third Task (level 3):  Recognition and Jurisdiction

Day 1-2

The Klamath were terminated as a tribe in the 1950s, and they were no longer eligible for federal housing,   social services, medical program, economic development, or educational assistance. 

  • View the “Klamath Termination Profile – Before and After” in the Resources below, which summarizes the overall welfare of the Klamath before and after Termination.
  • Review the steps a tribe must take to gain federal recognition using the graphic organizer "Federal Recognition of Indian Nations."
  • Complete the graphic organizer "Federal Recognition of Indian Nations" by visiting the sites appropriate for your group.

Day 3

  • Analyze how the tribe you're studying met or did not meet the qualifications as a tribe for recognition using the appropriate resources.
  • Create a class chart for recognition telling how your tribe met or did not meet the qualification for federal recognition as a tribe.
