Designing and Developing a Database Part 1 The logical database design

1. Students will be in groups of 5-7 students. Students decide on how the roles will be allocated. Two students can share the role of Supervising Manager if the students wish.

2. The Supervising manager/s will complete the Tasks  1 - 4.

3. Each of the Park Managers will research their area of the Zoo, collecting and assembling information about the animals in their Park. Students should use the internet, books, journals, magazines, zoos and any other information sources they choose to research the information.

4. The Supervising Managers and Park Managers will hold database design meetings and design a database designed for the Zoo.  Task 5.

The  meetings, project activities and business conducted in each meeting must be properly documented. Students can use the resources provided,  research or create their own business documents.  Refer resources section for examples of meeting and business documents in the "Business Resource Kit".

The database design process must properly documented and designed according to relational database design principles. Students can reference the resources provided or research their own methodologies. Refer resources section for "Database Resource Kit".

Other resources that should be used to facilitate the design meetings include: electronic white boards, internet, collaboration tools - sharepoint, wiki space or any other of choice of tool, Microsoft usenet blogs or developer technet or any open source material.

4. The final documentation that must be included in a portfolio for Task 6, must contain the following documents:     

A. Database E-R diagram of the Zoos database. Any of the following visual tools can be used:    

  www.smartdraw.com,   www.carettasoftware.com,   www.visual-paradigm.comwww.inspiration.com

B. Meeting, Project and Business documentation from each of the meetings.

C. Any supporting documentation from Park managers and Supervising Managers.
