Australia here we come!

Process

First, get into your groups and decide which part of Australia you would be interested to take a road trip.

Section 1

There are a few things you need to find out to plan this road trip:

  1. Attractions/Places of interest: You may make use of Google or https://www.australia.com/en-sg to find out more about the destinations you would like to visit. Do take note of how much each attraction or place of interest costs.
  2. Mileage: Arrange the destinations such that moving from place to place would be most cost- and time-efficient . Remember that you already have a rented car! Make use of Google Maps or any other website to find out the Mileage between the destinations.
  3. Speed Limits: Take note of the speed limits and note them down. This will be useful in your calculations later.

Using the formula that you have learn in class: Distance = Speed x Time, calculate the amount of time you will need to spend travelling to these places and whether or not the total time taken is at most 5 days. This 5 days also include tie spend doing daily activities such as eating and sleeping, and also time spent at an attraction/place of interest. Justify why you allocate a certain amount of time for certain activities.

Section 2

You would need more information to plan the budgeting for this trip. Remember the total budget for this trip is $3000.

  1. Petrol cost: The cost of petrol differs for different furl supplies, petrol kiosks and type of vehicle used. For standardization purposes, you can assume the cost of petrol to be $1.41/litre. Additionally, it is important to find out the distance that a car can cover per litre of petrol. This will allow you to calculate the total amount of petrol needed for the road trip and consequently, the total petrol cost. This is an important yet confusing part of the task, do check with your teachers if you are unsure about the instructions.                         **BONUS** Come up with a general formula to determine the relationship between cost of petrol, amount of petrol and distance traveled.
  2. Accommodation: At each destination where you decide to rest for the night, find a suitable accommodation that can fit all 5 of you. You may decide to find hotels, apartments, or airbnbs. The choice of accommodation is not restricted. It also does not matter if its unavailable for a stipulated date. Record the total cost and provide the link to the website that provides information for the accommodation chosen.
  3. Places of interest: Since you have taken note of the costs of the attractions/places of interest in the previous section, you may just add it on to the list. Remember to include tickets for all 5 members in the trip.
  4. Toll fees: Toll fees are collected at designated Toll stations normally along the highways. To ensure consistency, assume the toll fees to be $19.67 per 10 kilometers of road traveled anywhere in Australia.

Adding all of these information into the Excel Sheet you have created, use the sum formula that you have learnt in class to find the total expenditure to check if it is within the budget. If it is not within the budget, write a short explanation on why $3000 is not enough and what you and you group could possibly amend about the road trip such that it falls within $3000.

Record all of this information on an Excel Sheet and submit it by the end of this lesson.

Have fun researching!
