In The News: What's the Deal With Fake News?

Welcome seekers of truth! You are about to embark on an expedition of great importance. By completing the tasks listed below, you will be able to identify and present reliable information, identify "Fake News", and express how you did it. You will be able to teach others how to find credible sources and explain why this is an important skill. Before you begin, Please arm yourselves with the tools of knowledge you will need to complete your tasks:

  1. View the video, "How to Spot Fake News".

  2. View the worksheet, "Check it Out"  and use it to evaluate sources.


After completing the Skill Building Activities, find your table partner and begin your search for articles on one of the three topic choice: Politics, Global Warming, and the Vaccination Debate.

  1. Choose a topic and begin to search for information. Use your "Check it Out" guide in evaluating sources. You may also use any of the fact check sights recommended. Remember you are evaluating the information and not reporting on the research topic.

  2. Compile a list of 3 credible sources. Under the link to each article, tell us how you evaluated the information for credibility.

  3. Compile a list of 3 sources that do not meet the standards for credible information. Under each link provide your reasons for deeming the information as false or questionable.

  4. With your partner, Create a Google Slide that teaches how to find reliable sources and how to identify "Fake News".

  5. Present your Google Slide and 1 article example to the class in a 1-2 minute presentation.
