Watch the video above. Pay close attention to the topics discussed in the video because it will be used in later tasks.

Task Two

Handout will be given out prior. Website to access handout: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45469/beat-beat-drums

You will receive this handout prior but the electronic version is given above.

After reading, the class will discuss what they read and identify the key points of the poetry piece.

Task Three

Directions: In groups of three's, define these terms using the provided Internet links to research the following type of poetry and poetry terms. Type these terms and definitions into Microsoft Word. Label your page "Poetry Terms." You will not turn in the definitions you have written, however, they will help you later on so write all the details you need. In your groups, there needs to be an assigned roll for each member. You will need an explorer, a navigator (writes the terms and explanations), and a deck captain (prints the copies).

Task Four

Directions: This is one of the challenging obstacles in your voyage! It is your job to identify the answers to these questions using the links attached with them. You are not allowed to receive any help from your SENIOR voyager. Your SENIOR voyager can explain things but that it is! You are on your own.

How many challenges can you master?

1. Who is one of the most famous writers of Limerick? Write your own Limerick below. http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/patterns/limerick/limerick_acttxt.html

2. Listen to Mr. Prelutsky read his own poem "Louder than a Clap of Thunder". What are five of the comparisons to how loud father snores?

http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/poetry/jack_my_poem.htm

3. Visit Poet Kenn Nesbitt and his site Poetry for Kids. What does Mr. Nesbitt say about why he writes poetry?

http://www.poetry4kids.com/biographies/about-kenn-nesbitt

4. Dr. Seuss is probably one of the first exposures we have as a child to rhyming poetry. Visit Seussville and find the quote maker. What is the quote from Oh Beyond Zebra?

http://www.seussville.com/?section=home&isbn=&catalogID=&eventID=

5. What is the seventh line of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein? What poetry term is being used in the seventh line? Now replace this line with a line of your own using the same poetry term you stated.

Task Five

Directions: Weph! You did it! After you have completed Task Four, the deck captain will print three copies for everyone in previous group.  Keep the copy from Task Three next to you. In this task you will create your own short poem using one of the genres you discovered on the voyage! You will also need to display THREE of the poetry terms in your writing. After you have created your poem, you will have 2-3 minutes to prepare and 7 minutes to present this piece using the seven key concepts of public speaking. Your grade will weigh heavy on how you present the material in front of your peers so it is important to make sure that the piece is prepared properly.
