STEP 1 - MEET AND CHOOSE ROLES


Each team of scholars meets in a corner of the public market to be sure no other teams can overhear their plans.  The research topics of trade, history and geography and culture are then divided by team members.

You and a partner will research the development, spread, and impact of trade on the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.  Think about how you could present this information on a map and in a powerpoint.

You and a partner will research the history of the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai and the geography of North and West Africa.  Think about how you would display this information on a map and in a powerpoint.

You and a partner will research the culture and customs of the West African people from about AD 1000-15000.  Think about how you will show this information on a timeline and in a powerpoint.


STEP 2 - REVIEW & RESEARCH

Review chapter 13 with your team, specifically sections 1, 2, and 3.  Focus on geography, culture, and trade (including trade goods such as salt and gold!).  As you research your topic, take notes on information that you think will be helpful in your powerpoint and keep in mind the order in which events occur for your timeline.  Using a list of websites and your book as a resource, you will answer the guiding questions on your worksheet.  You will need to look for pictures AFTER finding your information to use on your powerpoint.


STEP 3 - CREATE POWERPOINT and TIMELINE

After you and your partner finish researching, you will get together with the whole team to create the powerpoint and timeline.  As a team, discuss what background, slide titles, and pictures are best for specific kinds of information. Determine the type of powerpoint (or prezi) you will create. Then, put it all together.  Make sure each team member has a contribution.

You powerpoints will need to include these components:
  • a minimum of at least 2 slides from each research topic—trade, history and geography, and culture (6, plus a title slide - total:7)
  • a minimum of at least 6 pictures
  • Interactive timeline can be online through my website or on paper and must include Mali's ride and fall to power, Ghana's rise and fall to power, and Songhai's rise and fall to power

Members of the trade, history and geography, and culture research groups will write a review of their topic: what did you learn from this assignment?  How did your team work together?  What contributions did you contribute?
