The Holes in Math

Instructions: The process for this web quest will be split into three parts. Part one will cover the book Holes and part two will cover the book How Not to Be Wrong. Part three will be the comparing and contrasting these two books. Part 1 and 3 of this web quest will be done individually and Part 2 will be done with your 3 o'clock partner.

Part 1: Holes

1.      Ge tout a few pieces of note book paper, pen/pencils, and calculator.

2.      Go to https://www.tes.com/us/teacher-lessons/problem-solving-based-on-holes-by-louis-sachar-7215364

3.      Open the PowerPoint slide from this website.

4.      Labe lthe questions on your paper Part 1.1-1.7. (total of 7 questions)

5.      Workout each problem and make sure you show all work

6.      Then explain in 2-3 paragraphs if you noticed while reading Holes these math problems? Do you think that our society has normalized some math so that we do not see it on an everyday basis?  

Part 2: How Not to Be Wrong

1.      Open a Microsoft Word Document and label the heading according to our classroom procedure (put partners name at the bottom of this page)

2.      Go to  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAvIR3vFu8c

3.      Watch the video and then discuss with your partner 5 things you have done in the past 24 hours that uses math. List those five things on your paper.

4.      Go to https://pumas.gsfc.nasa.gov/examples/index.php

5.      Choose 5 activities that are interesting to you and your partner. The activities most be between the grades levels of 7th-8th. Label these question on your paper by putting Part 2: "Activity Name". * Activity most be either math and science or math not just science*

6.      This website is designed to show the Practical Uses of Science and Math in the everyday world. After each activity explain the lesson learn from each of these activities using math and science.

Part 3: Compare and Contrast

1.      Get out a piece of paper and pencil.

2.      In 3-5 paragraphs compare and contrast the books Holes and How Not to Be Wrong.
