Shop Class Safety

Warm up: 

Working in pairs, studentswill use a K-W-L chart to list what they know and want to know about shop safety, At the end of the activities listed below, students will write a few sentences on what they learned about safety in a shop class. Students will follow the links provided to the appropriate websites and pages for instruction. You will have the entire period to perform the activities in the lesson and can be completed as homework if necessary. This lesson is to promote higher level thinking in a shop classroom. 

Activity #1

Teacher will stress safety rules in all areas of shop activities by having students opening attached documents. Teacher will then show two videos, one on shop safety and one on OSHA. Students will take turns reading the rules aloud to the class. The teacher will lead students on a tour of the wood shop and point out tool, liquid, and machine hazards. Students will learn where emergency equipment and item locations including eyewash stations, MSDS's, Fire extinguishers, phones, exits, etc. is located. Students will also be part of the activity by making safety posters for use in the shop area. Student understanding will include creating aworksheet with photos of safety equipment in the classroom and post them in their appropriate places. Teacher will discuss safety regulations  mandated by the state and school district. Teacher will show examples of actual material safety data sheets for hazardous materials used in the shop. Teacher will discuss different types of fire extinguishers and their functions. Teacher will discuss emergency procedures that have been adopted by the school. The teacher will end the activity by talking to students about personal experiences of dangerous situations caused by a lack of safety. 

Activity #2

Graphic Organizer: Students will create a mind map. Students will draw a circle in the center of a sheet ofpaper and label it; �Shop Safety Rules". They will draw four lines out from circle and label the lines with major components of safety.

Activity #3

Students will walk around the room listing the locations of each safety item shown on the worksheet when performing this activity.
