FAMILIES: NEAR AND FAR!

Process

20140220110512eqaLa.jpg

Step 1: We will listen attentively as I explain what a family is and the different types of families.

Step 2: We will then watch several videos about different families, e.g. Bambi.

Step 3: We will write out the names that the students call different members of their family, e.g. Mom, Dad, Papa, Nana,Sissy, etc. (names the class remembers from in the book, All Kinds of Families).

Step 4: We will begin a discussion about the videos and the different types of families the class has observed Did any of the characters in the videos represent the same names of people in your family?

Step 5:  What kinds of things do our families do for us? They protect us and comfort us when we're sad or hurt. They make sure we are warm and we eat, right? Much like the picture of the mommy elephant here covering the baby from the rain so the baby won't get wet.

Step 6: I will begin by drawing a picture of my family on butcher paper in front of the class. Then I will instruct the class to draw pictures of their families. We will be sure to label our family members.

Step 6a: Children can make a collage by using different pieces of construction paper for each individual family member OR they can create a portrait placing all members on the same piece of construction paper.

Step 7: I will then have the class choose a background from the scrapbook paper, which has been laid out for them.

Step 8: Lastly we will compile the portraits, laminate and bind them to create a Family Photo Album!
