Guiding Question:     What are the problems and solutions associated with child labor today?

Objective:  I will evaluate an author's claims and supporting details (evidence) by making inferences using a graphic organizer.

Steps Involved

  1. Decide on Persons for Roles 1, 2, 3, and 4 (5 Minutes)
  2. Research Information--2 days in computer lab (30 Minutes)
  3. Share Information/Ideas for powerpoint (30 Minutes)
  4. Create Presentation--1-2 days in computer lab (30 Minutes)
  5. Present the Problem/Solution PowerPoint (Next Class)

Before You Begin

Avoid plagiarism. Don't copy information straight from the articles.  Make inferences about what you read and then put it in your own words.  Click on this link to learn what plagiarism is:

How to Cite Your Sources

1.  Title of the web page
2  Title of the article in quotation marks
3.  Author (if listed, if no author write "none")
4.  Date web site was updated (if no date is listed write N.D.)

If you use information from any of the articles below, be sure to write down the the author, the title, the date.  You will use this information later in the group's  PowerPoint presentation by creating a Works Cited slide of all the resources your group used.  Click on the link below to learn how to write your information correctly using the accepted MLA style.

Suggested Examples of Evidence (you may choose to include other evidence  that you feel is important or relevant as long as you stay on topic for your assigned role).

  1. What type of work are the children doing?
  2.  How many hours a day do they work? How much do they get paid?
  3.  What caused them to have to go to work?
  4.  How old are they? At what age or how many years have they been working?
  5.  Has their health or education been affected by the work they do?  Explain.
  6. What family problems do they have?
  7. What country are they from?
  8. Do they go to school?  If not, why not?
  9. What do they wish they could do instead, but can't? (their hopes, dreams)

There are four roles needed to complete this task.  You may choose to find claims and evidence using all the resources listed or you may select to use only 2-3 of the resources, but you must use more than one resource listed for your role.

Lead Investigator #1:  This person is to gather basic information about the history of child labor including its definition,  types of jobs children do, industries that use or have used child labor,  and what the author's claims and evidence is about those industries.  Refer to the questions above on "Examples of Evidence."  Don't copy--make inferences--and use your own words. Be sure to write down the title of the article, author, date if you use information from any of these web sites. (See "How to Cite your Sources" above).

1.  Define "child labor." (use your own words)
2.  Look for evidence on the types of jobs children did.  Give a few examples.
         - was the work dangerous?  what kinds of health problems did they suffer?
3.  Name some companies or industries use or have used child labor?  Are these companies we know today?  What type of work do the children do.
4.  How much are they paid?  How long do they work?

NOTE:  The lead investigator also works with the assistants to make sure all work is being completed correctly and in a timely manner so the Creator can begin designing the PowerPoint slides.  You will research articles using the following web sites:

Assistant Investigator #2:  This person collects information about 2-3 products that were made using child labor by writing down the author's claims and evidence to support those claims.  Choose 2-3 products from the following websites and gather evidence about how those products were made.  Refer to the questions above on "Examples of Evidence."  Don't copy--make inferences--and use your own words. Be sure to write down the title of the article, author, date if you use information from any of these web sites. (See "How to Cite your Sources" above).

1.  What products are the children making?  Do we use these products today?
2.  Is their health affected?  How many hours do they work?  How much do they get paid?
3.  How old are the children?  What country are they from?  Why are they working?

Assistant Investigator #3:  This person will create a "Call to Action" on what can be done to end child labor.  You will research the following articles and give 3-4 examples (evidence) on what is currently being done to prevent child labor and/or be creative and discuss with your group your own solutions on what can be done to protect child laborers.  Don't copy--make inferences--and use your own words. Be sure to write down the title of the article, author, date if you use information from any of these web sites. (See "How to Cite your Sources" above). Creator: This person is to create the PowerPoint using the information from the investigators.  In addition, this person is to begin exploring design options for the PowerPoint presentation (background, pictures, font).  The teacher will be working with these people on how to create a PowerPoint while the rest of the class begins their research in the computer lab.  Creators will design 8-9 slides (introduction, 5 informational slides, conclusion, works cited).  For the PowerPoint presentation to be successful, it is important that Investigators communicate their findings to the Creator and that all writing is organized and legible from the Investigators.

The Creator may use the websites below to copy and paste relevant pictures into the PowerPoint.  If you can't find a picture you want, discuss what you are looking for with the teacher before proceeding.
