The Dedels Quest for Sochi Gold!
Process
The Qualifying Round: Early Civilizations! Innovations! and The Olympics!
Early Civilizations Innovations Trading Cards: Create your pack of cards which describe and explain important innovations of Early Civilizations: When finished we will make copies so you can trade and share with your peers.
Create 5 different trading cards using the template provided below:
You will notice that there are 2 different files in two different formats: The Trading card template is in a MS word format so that you may create your cards using a computer, or you can print the PDF file and use it as a paper template.
The Golden Card template is for your information on the Olympic games!
Use the links below to investigate different innovations from different Early Civilizations to create your trading cards!
The Competition Round: Creating Timelines
Your second task is to create two separate timelines:
One Timeline will document the history of the Olympics, starting from its inception to the Sochi Games this February. The Second Timeline will document the history of a specific Olympic event (winter games, see link below for a list of events) of your choice. Please, try to trace the history of your event to it's invention, maybe even the equipment used...Your goal is to see if you can somehow find a connection between your event of choice, and an Early Civilization Innovation. (Hint: perhaps a student could trace the history of hockey back to the invention of skates???)
Connect the two timelines at their point of intersection!
There are Timeline examples and templates for use in the Timeline section below: You may notice that one of the examples is in a video format, your format/media is up to you!
The Medal Round! Your Final culminatin Task!
Imagine that you have been asked by the CBC to help broadcast an Olympic event at this years winter games! Your job as the head commentator will be to introduce the event to viewers, discuss the history of your sport, slide in some interesting tidbits about how it connects to Early Civilizations, and finally explain how the event is contested and when it will be broadcast!
You will be provided with a video recording device: On the day of your recording you should have a rehearsed script full of interesting facts and historical anecdotes, your introduction should last between 3-8 minutes. You may use props, and you may decide on your setting or background (outside on a snowy day). Check out the rubric for your levels of achievement.
Will it be Gold, Silver or Bronze! (For Inspiration...Check out some of the intros below)
